Steve, I have used this device and this is where and why. We were doing a research project to find the Gambusy minnow on San Salvidor shores. My team was to swim into and area that had questionable water clarity. It was an outflow from a treatment plant. Being an x-navy man I suited up and got the water samples and returned to shore. I felt better and after the ordeal I did not test positive for any medical needs. I was referred to as the sewer diver for the rest of the trip but I remembered that submariners are referred to as sewer pipe riders in an loving way. We were able to confirm the minnow was there and eating the mosquito population. I have also used this mask with audio equipment attached for communications. I guess it is peace of mind in dirty water to use this device. In finishing my reading of the "Shadow Divers" for the second time I could see the use of the mask inside the Sub in the silted areas. Then again as a diver your decision to risk exposure to the elements is a personal choice. I do feel I could not stand by and not go to the aid of someone in need having the knowledge to deal with STD's or what ever. As an avid volunteer firefighter/boater the decision is be prepared for exposure all the time. "Be Prepared" from BSA days is a motto I use and practice. This is my opinion and I'm sticking 2 it.
