Hi Steve, and welcome! I just sent you a long private message regarding the question you sent me. Welcome to diving! Once you get your cert course, you will find that there are others in the class that are also in your position. You'll realize that there are others to dive with you. All it takes is asking, or posting on this (or other) board to see who is heading up to Dutch for some freshwater diving!

Again, welcome to the board.

Hi Everyone!

My name is Frankie and I live near Reading, PA. This is my second year as a certified diver. I have completed AOW and Nitrox with Scuba Venture in Reading, PA. I have just started my DiveCon class and look forward to becoming an instructor some day.

My dive history started at Willow Springs Quarry where there is night diving, 24-7. Most of my practice dives were in Dutch Springs, where I hold an annual membership. Other places I have been diving include North Myrtle Beach, SC; Morehead City, NC; Wilimington, NC; Key Largo, FL; and most recently Lake Erie.

I really enjoy wreck diving, especially those of a historical nature. Some day, when I have gain a lot more experience, I would love to try some more technical diving including learning wreck penetration and wreck research.

I am also looking for good recommendations for NJ dive charters. Some day, when I grow up and become a DiveCon, I would love to take some from my shop to some of the Jersey boats.

I look forward to learning and even diving with some of you!

Have a great night!

Frankie W

Frankie,

Welcome to NJdive! I look forward to your trip reports from off-shore. You'll have to forgive me, but what is a DiveCon? Dive Convert? Dive Constable? Dive Felon (for con...)?

How was diving in Lake Erie? I've been in Lake Ontario when I go to the St. Lawrence Seaway each year (with the exception of this year  )

Again, welcome!

Mike

My name is Pete I live on staten Island, I completed my NAUI training last year and I was finally able to purchase my own gear this year. I want to do some local diving because I can't see having this equipment and myself sitting around for most of the year and only using it when we go to Florida or on vacation. My only problem that I see is that many of the dive trips that are listed here look like they are occupied with seasoned divers and I wouldn't want to drag anyone down due to my inexperience. I'm going to probably go out on one of the local trips that run in about 50 to 70 feet of water this way I can get some time and bubbles under my wings.
My wife is my buddy but she wants no part of local diving. So I'm hoping that if I spend some time out I can come back with some good stories to convice her to come out and try it.

Welcome Pete,

What kind of gear did you buy? Also how much diving have you done? I ask this because local diving here in the northeast can be a little more tricky than diving in Florida. You may need a few extra pieces of equipment and a few different skills. Nothing that can't be learned though and you've come to the right place to ask those questions you may have. Again welcome, and dive safe

Jay

outside of the quarry I haven't done any yet, that is why when I see most of the people that seem to be going out on these charters. I wonder where they actually got their experience in the water for the dive trips that they are participating in. I know from what I have read that up here can be quite challenging. But I figure I have to start some where and the only way for me to get any time in the water is to find somewhere local.

I have the usual dive school graduate stuff:
henderson 3mm (i know I will need at least a 7mm for up here) I liked the farmer john that we used in the quarry for the training dives.

aeris xr1 nx computer / compass/ gauge setup
sherwood avid bc
sherwood 1st / 2nd / octo
and the other basic pp mask snorkel hood gloves etc...

Welcome Pete,

There are a bunch of boats that offer shallower dives for newer divers. Many of them cater to newer divers, because new divers who enjoy the sport become regulars. Check out the schedule page and call a few of the boats/shops to see who is offering dives like these. Atlantic Divers is one that comes to mind. Like Jay said, there are a few pieces of dive gear needed here that are not needed in the warm clear waters, like a wreck reel (used not just on the wrecks), a good light, a pony or bailout bottle, and so on. Diving at Dutch is great practice, but you can't go wrong with a few dives off the coast. I look forward to diving with you!

Mike

Thanks Mike
I'll look into the Atlanta divers and I'll start putting together some of the other pieces that you suggested that I get. Like I said I'm hoping to become a regular, but I'm just not sure where to start out getting my feet wet. That's why when I saw that this site catered to the area I signed right up.

Thanks for the great feedback

Hey all,
I'm from Brick NJ. Joined the Navy in '01 and took up diving on '04. I got certified in VA and have spent the last 3 years in Guam diving on some awesome reefs and wrecks. I have been diving in the Philippines, Palau, NJ, VA, HI, and Guam...not in that order.
I am a current divemaster though not practicing. I am a tec diver that just certified trimix yesterday. Yes, it's through PADI, and if you want to say something about that, hold your tongue and check out the program first.
I am getting out of the Navy next year and heading to Divers Academy International in NJ so I can take my love of pressure to work.
My interests are diving what others can't or won't, and seeing what other can't or won't....and women...and some Halo 3 on XBOX LIVE.
My personal max depth is 237.6 ft or 72 meters on an AJ-2 bomber in Subic Bay Philippines. http://skaneateles.org/navy/subic_aj-2.html
I did not write the above linked page. Johan who is mentioned on that page is my certifying trimix instructor. I highly recommend his facility to those who want to see some great wrecks in all depths. Look him up by searching for Johan's Dive Resort or Beach Resort in Subic Bay.

Hi,

My name is Joseph Terzuoli. Most divers know me as zero or Captain Zero. I run the dive boat John Jack a custom built 50 footer docked in Point Pleaseant Beach NJ.

I have been diving since 1976, when I was 13 years old. I cut my diving teeth on NE wreck diving, specifically the wrecks local to Belmar off the Jack Pot a former local dive boat. I am certified all the way up to Tri-mix and re- breather I have had the opportunity to dive most of the major wrecks in this area plus mant warm water destinations/

I will try to post a few trip reports as the season progresses

Welcome to the forum Joe! I met you at the flea market last year. I've been posting your upcoming dives and your schedule on the NJDive.com site for a while now, so it's nice to see you active on the board. If there is anything I can do for you, let me know.

Mike
