I have been looking around at the various dive computers and prices and was Looking for some insight.

Is it worth to go out and spend the money on an expensive dive computer such as "Oceanic Datamax Pro Plus II" which seems like it can do anything i would ever need and More. Or would it just be smarter to go with something a Little more conservative and little more basic like "Aeris XR1 Dive Computer Console"

Steve,

I don't know what kind of certs you currently hold but I guess buying a computer would be dependent on what type of diving you will be doing. There are many brands and styles that range in price but price is not what's important. More expensive doesn't always mean better.

I would definitely suggest at least getting one that is nitrox compatible to 40%. Air integrated or wrist watch styles in my opinion is a matter of preference although some people use both for redundancy. You can always start off with a less expensive model and later on maybe after taking a more technical class, logging a certain number of dives or achieving a certain certification you can give yourself a gift and buy yourself a new more advanced computer.

I dove for a long time with air and just had a regular analog gauge set up. After I completed my AOW and Nitrox I went ahead and got a wrist mount computer. Nothing fancy but it does the job. Good luck in your quest!

P.S. The Scuba Flea Market is this sunday the 15th in Toms River. There's always lots of stuff there and you may find a computer that suits you. Also there are so many knowledgeable people there you can definitely get your questions answered.

Jay

Hey Thanks alot for the info Jay.

I am actually just getting open water Certified just started my classes but trying to get the things i think i would need. I'd rather buy something right the first time then to have to spend extra just to upgrade when i could get what i need in one shot. If the less hi tech would do all the things i would need then that would work for me but if not i am not against spending a few dollars to be future prepared

Steve,

If it were me in your shoes, I'd pick up a nitrox compatible computer, either a wrist mount of console mount. You don't need to break the bank for this. I have the Suunto Mosquito on my wrist as a primary and the Oceanic Dataplus II on my console as a backup. I like both, and neither put me out too much. The Oceanic was used, and I got the Suunto at Lang's on sale for a steal. The Scuba Flea Market (which by the way Jay, I cannot make anymore....I gotta work) is next weekend, and you should be able to find a great deal there.

Mike

I don't think I will be making it either Mike. I have a wedding on Sat and don't think I want to get up early. we'll see. are we still on for the 21st?

Steve, like Mike said you don't have to break the bank my friend. I have a cressi archemede II wrist mount I got on sale. it has plenty of features and does up to 2 gas mixtures up to 99 o/o oxygen.
