I spearfish a lot in Florida, Hogs, Groupers, Muttons, etc. I really enjoy it. What's the spearfishing like in Jersey. What do people normally hunt? I know about the bugs with the monster claws don't see those in Fla. but that's about it. I may want to try it in Jersey.

The two main fish that get speared the most here are black sea bass (yummy), and black fish...aka...tog (also yummy). Occasionally someone brings up a monkfish, ling, or something else, but the black fish and tog are the main targets since they are also plentiful. Lobsters are very popular, with many divers going out specifically for them, and if you are deep enough, you can load up on scallops (yea, I'm talking about you Rob). Mussels are plentiful on many wrecks, but they put up a hell of a fight and are difficult to catch (note my sarcasm). I love underwater hunting. I have two pole spears and one spear gun. I'm going to try my banded spear gun this next season. Its been sitting in my closet like an abandoned step-child.

Welcome to the board.

Ok so I guess I'm going to have to eventually try my hand at it. I'll have to learn what they look like first, and get some bottom time in. Once I'm comfortable though watch out.haha.

My AB Biller 36 special has only been underwater 4 or 5 times. I shot a nice Seabass with it. I prefer a six foot pole spear with barbed paralizer tip. I have been much more succesful with it and produced a few very large Blackfish.

I'm with you on the pole spear. I have a JBL 38 special spear gun thats only seen water once, but my pole spear is my trusty sidekick (besides my usual dive buddy, Scott). The reload time takes away from the spear gun. The pole spear can be ready to slam into a fish within seconds if you miss the first shot. I have a 6' pole spear, but have had other sizes. I always go back to ol'reliable. I've gone back and forth between the paralyzer tip and the single tip. Black sea bass and Tog (Black fish) are plentiful on many wrecks.

Mike,

You forgot the flats. I know you like shooting fluke and flounder as well.

True...I did forget. Actually, last year I got my very first flattie. He was a nice one too. Got him on the Dykes while diving off the Stingray.

...and lets not forget the lobsters and scallops too.

I can't take all the credit for the picture, but check it out anyway.
